What Is SEO?

SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ and is the process of getting a website to rank well in search engine results pages.

There are SEO fundamentals which should be implemented or at least considered at the Web Design and Web Development stages, but are often not by a lot of SEO companies, as many of them have no web design or web development experience or expertise.

When should I consider SEO?

Pre Website Build

First we identify your target demographic and potential customers, then during content design and copyrighting, keyword research and competitor research should be done to help create a copydeck for all pages on the website incorporating the keywords and keyphrases that you want your website to rank for.

Keyword Research:

Keyword research should be carried out to identify the most popular words or phrases that users are typing into search engines when looking for your product or services.

Sometimes the most popular keywords are not the best ones to try to rank for as the competition will be quite fierce, in these cases sometimes it is better to try to target long tail searches, this means targetting specifics terms rather than generic terms. For example ‘Men’s Shoes’ will be a very competitive term, but ‘Men’s Brown Leather shoes’ will be less competitive.

Copy Deck:

A Copy-Deck is a document that contains the textual content that will be displayed on your web pages. The Copy-Deck contains copy with all the targeted keywords and phrases and will be sectioned into pages and sub sections so we are fully aware of the copy that will be displayed on the website before development commences. Creating a Copy-Deck at this stage allows us to better plan the layout of the website because we will be aware of the amount of copy before the design is completed.

Well Written Code:

Properly written HTML should not be underestimated when trying to achieve good SEO. Lighter, faster loading, semantic HTML with properly constructed titles, meta descriptions, headings and alt tags are essential in the quest for search engine dominance.

Post Website Build

Once the website is completed there are multiple things that you can do to improve your search results positions, here is a brief overview of some of the more important ones.

Social Media:

Social Media has quickly become one of the most important factors for gaining, maintaining and improving a good position in the search results. Social media provides a platform for you to promote your product or services, receive feedback, reviews and build links back to your site from recommendations.

Local SEO:

Local SEO is becoming more and more important as users of internet enabled devices search for results based on their current location. With around 50% of mobile searches having ‘local’ intent, making sure your website is Local SEO optimized is very important.

Link building:

Quality, inbound links to your website can be extremely beneficail for SEO, by quality we mean links from reputable websites that have a good SEO standing themselves. Links from ‘Spammy’ or poor sites can have a negative effect. Many companies will offer link building services for relativly small amounts of money, these should be avoided as there is no ‘Quick Fix’ for link building, it is something that has to be done properly and carefully.

How Do Web Searches Work?

Google, and other search engines use complex algorythms to analyse a website’s content and HTML code, these algorythms are designed to return better qualty more relevant results for the user, based on the search term used.

Poory written, bloated HTML code, poor quality content that is not keyword optimised or is overstuffed with keywords and broken links and pages are all things can have a negative effect on your SEO ranking.
